Oh Baby!

In the fall of 2023, many things changed at Collins Home. I became the new director, and we refreshed our logo and mission statement. By late October 2024, we were providing housing for three different homeless sibling groups. One of those sibling groups included 14-month-old paternal twins. Very quickly, we were all reminded that babies change everything.

The first weeks with the twins were tough. They missed their mom; they were in a new home with different faces, voices, and smells. Everything in their lives changed, which was difficult for their tiny bodies to process—many sleepless nights filled with tears. But our caregivers, with their unwavering dedication, were there every step of the way, providing comfort and care. Did I mention that babies change everything?

Fast forward six months, and the twins have transformed. Witnessing their journey from restless nights to peaceful bedtimes and long naps has been a profound joy. They have seamlessly integrated into the group, engaging in play, and learning new words. Their tiny fingers now confidently point to pictures in their beloved books. While there have been a few hiccups, the twins are undeniably thriving.

The twins’ mom is also making considerable progress along her journey. Her faithful visits and her commitment to working two jobs to establish a safe home for them will continue to be key factors in their family's reunification. I am unsure how long the twins will be with us, but I will cherish every moment we have along this journey, knowing that their mom is doing everything she can to provide a better future for them.

My daughter is a twenty-one-year-old junior in college. I miss those days when she called me mommy and looked at me with her eyes of innocence. When she was small, I was in a hurry for her to grow up, and now that she is grown, I long for those days gone by.

A wise woman once told me, “In parenting, the days are long, but the years are short.” To parents and families struggling with life’s demands, we see you. To those of you who are hurting and need a voice of reason, we hear you. To those who have gone through the struggle and are on the other side, we celebrate with you.
